January 2025 has seen very extreme cold temps this year. Cold stunned turtles have difficulty swimming have been reported washed ashore. When the temperature of the water drops below 50 degrees the sea turtles body temperature drops. Three South Carolina sea turtles have been rescued from cold stunning this year. The cold stunned turtles are not able to metabolism body temp and lose the ability to swim and feed. Cold stunning is a type of hypothermia that occurs when sea turtles are exposed to cold water for extended periods. Having difficulty swimming cause the turtles to drown floating on the water surface or end up washed ashore. So, if you see a sea turtle along the shore call your local turtle hospital for your region of coast line.
